Ideas for Home:

Alphabet/Phonics:

·        Magnet letters- have your child try to put the alphabet in order

·        Label items around the house with words or the beginning sound (ex. “door” or “d” for door-put the label on the item)

·        Read road signs aloud as you drive down the street, then encourage your child to do the same

·        Have your child go on an alphabet hunt through the house.  Have them look for everything that starts with “c”.  Clock, cat, etc.

Word Work:

  • “Rhyme Time”- have your child try to rhyme items or words.  (mom, tom….dad, had, sad, etc.)
  • As you drive down the street, tell your child, “I spy a house, that rhymes with mouse.”  “I see a car, that rhymes with ?”
  • Take your child’s spelling words or word wall words and use them in sentences, write them and put them around the house, or on the bathroom mirror.  This will ensure that your child will see them and become familiar with them during the week.

Reading:

  • Reading to your child is great---but please have your child read to you too.  They should read every night!
  • Take a picture walk with your child.  Go through a book and talk about the pictures.  This way your child will know what words and information to expect to see when they read the book.  This is 1 of the first comprehension strategies that your child will use as a reader.
  • Preview a book before you have your child read it to you.  Look for sight words such as, “they.”  Then tell your child that they should “hunt” for this word as they read.  They can put a sticky note on the word each time they find it.

Writing:

  • Have your child write in a journal.
  • Have your child write a letter.
  • Write your child little notes and leave them around the house.  Then, they can write you back.  You can even have a mailbox just for mail to and from the family!

Math:

  • Kids today do not often see their parents using change to pay for items---so, “charge” your child do to things around the house.  Have them pay you 5 cents for dinner, or 17 cents to go to bed.  Let them do the same thing to you.  This will ensure that they become familiar with using money each day.
  • Make sure that you have an analog clock in the house.  Use sticky notes to put the 5 minute intervals on the clock.  Tell you child that you are eating at 6:30.  Encourage them to monitor the clock and tell you the time periodically.
